چکیده

www.aafp.org/afp AMERICAN FAMILY PHYSICIAN 315 tially estimated an incidence of 75 per 100,000 persons per year, but subsequent prospective studies give a range of 12.6 to 18 per 100,000 persons annually. Controversy still exists about the correct incidence because of differing criteria used to define ARDS. The prevalence of ARDS is reported to be between 15 and 18 percent of all ventilated patients. While a mortality rate greater than 50 percent is reported in the majority of clinical investigations performed between 1979 and 1994, more recent studies show a decline in mortality to be between 32 and 45 percent.

However, recent trials using a new “lung protective” approach to mechanical ventilation resulted in significant reductions in mortality rates. Data from these studies represent an encouraging breakthrough in the manag...

Validity of Spo2/Fio2 Ratio in Detection of Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Introduction:  One ofdiagnostic criteria for Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome is  pao2/fio2 (PF) ratio 300 for ALI or 200 for ARDS. This criteria requires invasive arterial sampling. Measurement of Spo2/Fio2 (SF) ratio by pulseoximetry may be a reliable non invasive alternative to the PF ratio.   Methods and Materials: In a cross sectional study we enrolled 105 sample o...
